This guide covers downtown Chinatown around Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West. It is distinct from East Chinatown and other Chinese commercial centres across Toronto.

Start at Spadina and Dundas

Downtown Chinatown radiates from the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West. Food markets, restaurants and multilingual storefronts make the streets themselves central to a visit. Kensington Market is a useful neighbouring stop, but deserves its own time rather than being treated as the same place.

Choose a short walking circuit and leave room for browsing. If you plan to buy groceries as well as eat, consider the journey home and what you can comfortably carry. Confirm an individual restaurant’s opening hours and booking arrangements directly.

Help customers find the correct door

A business with a street-level sign may have its actual entrance beside another shop or up a staircase. Check the full arrival route: street number, doorway, stairs or lift, and unit identifier. Give a first-time visitor directions that work without local knowledge.

When using more than one language on a sign or menu, establish a clear reading order and have the wording reviewed by a fluent reader. Keep essential numbers, opening hours and pickup instructions consistent across printed material and the website. Design for legibility at the distance where people will read.

Assess food and retail space in operation

A photograph of an empty unit cannot show how a delivery, queue and stockroom work together. Ask the landlord and project team to identify the existing services, storage space and access arrangements relevant to your business. Confirm which proposed changes belong in the lease discussion.

For a refresh, distinguish the surfaces that need replacement from those that can be retained. Price installation access, removal of old graphics and making good alongside the new sign. A complete scope is easier to compare than a quotation for the printed face alone.
